Dealing with careeR and life

changes in difficult times

“I can’t change the direction of the wind but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination.”- Jimmy Dean

Life is filled with uncertainty. More so today than ever before.

The Coronavirus outbreak has reminded us that life is unpredictable and can change very rapidly.

We are all riding this emotional roller coaster with our thoughts and feelings whirring around in our minds.

When will the pandemic end?

Will life ever return to normal?

How am I going to face the future?

Life can feel like it’s spinning completely and utterly out of control.

We may have elevated anxiety and uncertainty over the health and safety of ourselves and our loved ones, our job, financial situation, relationships, the economy …..… the list is endless.

The fear of the unknown and the uncertainty of our future can also leave us feeling anxious, stressed and powerless.

As human beings, we crave security. We want to feel safe, secure and have a sense of control.

While many things remain outside our control, our mindset is key to coping with difficult situations and facing the unknown. It’s important to realise that even though we may not have control over everything, we do have control over how we respond to a given situation.

No matter what circumstances we have to deal with, we always have the power to make the best of the situation.

On a personal level, I try to take difficult situations and reframe them as challenges; as opportunities for life learning and personal growth. It’s about turning negative situations around to bring about positive outcomes, focusing on the here and now.

The above outlook has helped me overcome a lot of difficult situations life has thrown at me.

We can choose to view a given situation positively or negatively.

We can choose to allow the situation to make us or break us.

We can choose to live in hope or in despair.

We can choose to allow our fears to paralyze us or we can choose to bravely shape our future by adjusting the sails to reach our destination.

The choice is in our control.
